Rapid Fire Update - June 2025

Guidance on Immigration

There have been two recent developments that provide guidance and assistance to local officials as concerns are raised regarding operations by federal agencies. What are the agency representatives authorized to do and to what extent must local officials comply? On May 29, 2025, Attorney General Andrea Campbell issued Know Your Rights: ICE Enforcement A Guide for Immigrants, Families and Communities. Further, on June 19th, the federal District Court of Rhode Island, in a case brought by 20 states including Massachusetts, issued a preliminary injunction enjoining the U.S. Department of Transportation and Secretary Sean Duffy from enforcing an Immigration Enforcement Condition on federal transportation grants. The Condition required recipients to cooperate with federal officials in the enforcement of federal immigration law. Both documents are worth a careful read.
